Portable Stirling Power

The core of Sunpower technology is the Free-Piston Stirling Engine (FPSE) invented by Sunpower. The FPSE converts heat into electricity in a hermetically sealed vessel using the Stirling thermodynamic cycle. Sunpower uses patented gas bearing technology that prevents contact during operation, eliminating wear and the need for lubrication, which results in many years of maintenance-free, high-efficiency power generation. As a testament to this level of efficiency and reliability, NASA has been funding development and production of Sunpower's FPSE's as a potential next generation power conversion system for deep space missions.

Current Development Status

The 1 kW Stirling engine component has successfully demonstrated that it is ready for commercial deployment. Sunpower is developing the engine controller and the balance of plant components to meet the requirements of various applications. The current 1 kW developer's kit is a lab-based engineering unit to assist potential integrators and research groups in understanding the technology and developing future products based on the technology. It is not yet a product ready for sale to the end user.

What are we looking for?

Ideally, Sunpower is seeking potential partners with viable applications and an established sales and service base in the application's market. Sunpower is working to identify the key specifications needed to deliver product to various markets, and would like to work directly with potential integrators to better understand the requirements.
